Writing and Publishing Research Articles in English

“Recently [2025], I had the pleasure of participating in an academic writing workshop facilitated by Carrie Dohe, and the whole experience was truly rewarding. Carrie’s professionalism, and genuine passion for supporting researchers made the learning process both enjoyable and intellectually stimulating.
"Three insights stood out to me in particular: 1) Carrie encouraged us to study the journals we want to publish in and ask a fundamental yet often overlooked question: Who needs my work? She also pointed out something that has stayed with me -- when we publish, we are also speaking to the scholars whose work we cite; they are our crowd. This reframing made me reconsider how I position my research within academic conversations; 2) Her breakdown of paragraph architecture and the essential structure of a research article was eye-opening. It clarified not only how to build an argument logically, but also how to guide the reader with intention and clarity; 3) I particularly loved the practical exercises she offered. One of them was to become a “critical reader” by spending two weeks reading only abstracts, noticing what attracts or repels you — and then gradually moving to introductions, methods, and so on. It’s such a simple yet powerful way to sharpen writing skills.

"During the workshop, we also explored punctuation and grammar choices across different sections of an article — for example, how stylistic decisions shift when describing methods versus interpreting results. These nuances made me more attentive to clarity and precision in my English writing.
"Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and left feeling inspired, better equipped, and more confident in my academic writing. I highly recommend collaborating with Carrie Dohe, and I would gladly join another learning experience with her in the future.”

“Ms. Dohe, I greatly appreciate the workshop [on writing and publishing research articles] you held for us! With your expertise and experience you are contributing to a sophisticated qualification program for doctoral students.”
Sibel Vurgun, Director, Graduate Academy, Eberhard Karl University of Tübingen, Germany

Successful Conference Presentations
“Ms. Dohe knew how to create a pleasant learning atmosphere in which the skills acquired could be strengthened. She competently accompanied the learning process with constructive comments and was able to respond to the individual needs of the participants. It was also very helpful that Dr. Dohe incorporated her own experience as an active scholar into the course. For anyone who would like to improve their ability to present themselves adequately at international conferences, I can strongly recommend participating in this course.”
Dr. Tobias Müller, Dilthey Fellow (Volkswagen Foundation), Philosophical Seminar, Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz
“I can warmly recommend this seminar [on giving professional presentations at international conferences] to every young scholar as well as to experienced scientists! Ms. Dohe not only teaches the basic presentation techniques to great advantage, she also helps the individual participant to speak, argue and communicate confidently in English.”
Prof. Ingrid Hentschel, Vice Dean, Department of Social Affairs, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences
“The contents of the course were optimally adapted to our needs. Ms. Dohe gave example of specific vocabulary and phrases; language exercises were conducted, `language emergency situations´ trained, as well as suggestions for the design of lectures, speeches, and abstracts given. Each participant presented his or her own conference presentation and received individual feedback, also with video recordings. I highly recommend Ms. Dohe's course. It is the ideal refresher in the run-up to international congresses and I am sure that our department will continue to take courses with her.”

"I took part in the workshop ‘Professional Presentations at Conferences and in the Academic World.’ The content covered a wide range of interesting and relevant topics – from general presentation structure to effective networking strategies. Each part was presented in a clear, straightforward, and easy-to-understand manner. What stood out to me the most was how attentively Dr. Dohe addressed our individual concerns and questions. Personally, I found the strategies for handling follow-up questions during presentations especially valuable. Overall, I feel the workshop had a positive and lasting impact on how I will approach future presentations."
Johannes Brüning, Department of Natural Sciences and Electrical Engineering, Westphalian University of Applied Sciences

“HUGE thanks for the awesome training [in the course ‘Professional Presentations at Conferences and in the Academic World’]! I am writing you now to swiftly convey a pre-feedback to describe how much I feel delighted and enlightened for joining your workshop just these two days. As it’s been said ‘People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care,’ so you are not only a professional in your field but also a genuine person with a high profile of kindness.”
Hussamadin M. Kadhim, M.Sc., Department of Cell Biology at Bielefeld University

“Last Thursday I held a 10-minute presentation of my PhD thesis at a meeting of the Department of Nutrition and Facility Management of the Munster University of Applied Sciences. My supervisor told me I really impressed the dean. So, the presentation the week before in your class was the perfect preparation for that. I am really glad I had the chance to practice there.”
Christina Strotmann, MBA

Reading, Writing and Study Skills

Dr. Carrie Dohe’s workshop on Academic Reading, Study and Writing Skills in English [in April 2026] has genuinely been one of the most useful things I’ve taken part in since beginning my PhD at Goethe University Frankfurt. Like many early-career researchers, I often felt unsure and had been struggling with how to work through dense academic texts without losing hours, and the workshop addressed that gap very clearly.
The sessions were refreshingly practical. We didn’t just discuss reading and writing strategies in theory, Carrie had us put them into practice straight away. I picked up some surprisingly simple strategies for getting through difficult papers without feeling lost, and for making my own writing clearer. A few of these methods really stuck with me, and I’ve already started using them. I came away with a small set of very useful tools.
What also stood out was the atmosphere Carrie created. She was warm, attentive, and genuinely curious about each participant’s research, which made it easy to participate, ask questions, and exchange ideas with other PhD students working in completely different fields. She also took time to talk about wellbeing and looking after yourself during the PhD, a side of doctoral life that I think a lot of us forget about.
For any researcher considering it: two days very well spent.

As a first-year PhD student in Computer Science at Goethe University Frankfurt, I attended the workshop “Academic Reading, Study and Writing Skills in English” on May 8-9, 2025, by Dr. Carrie Dohe hoping to elevate my research skills. More particularly, with my personal background being more focused on application and development, I felt quite overwhelmed by the prospect of conducting sophisticated literature reviews. Luckily, this interactive two-day experience did not only help me in overcoming the well-known imposter syndrome; Dr. Dohe also opened my eyes to the importance of a clear writing style - and how to successfully disentangle beneficial insights even in its absence. Alongside practical exercises introducing literature analysis, skimming and scanning, Dr. Dohe shared great advice on balancing physical and mental exercises in day-to-day life to improve my health and focus (my personal favourite being the 5-min-writing). I can highly recommend anyone working in academia to participate and am looking forward to learn even more in the future!”

The 2025 PHD International Retreat at the University of Applied Science Frankfurt am Main, and it was one of the most engaging academic writing sessions I have experienced. Carrie's teaching style was witty, fun, and highly practical. It was the perfect combination for a topic that can often feel intimidating. Carrie filled the workshop with hands-on exercises, sharp insights, and memorable examples that made the concepts immediately applicable.
One of the strongest takeaways was her emphasis on clarity as the key to being read and cited. I learned that editing too early can obstruct the natural flow of ideas, making it essential to first write freely and revise later. Writing daily, even in small amounts, was another habit she strongly encouraged.

Carrie broke down good academic writing into cohesion, clarity, and concision. She taught how to structure sentences by starting with what readers already know before introducing new information, and to craft paragraphs that always answer the question: Why should the reader care?
I particularly appreciated her advice to stay close to the heart of our research by always maintaining a clear key message. Her tips on technical elements, such as creating table titles using both a noun (“what it is”) and a verb (“what it does”), or keeping the subject as close as possible to the verb, were simple but powerful.

The workshop also covered punctuation in a refreshingly straightforward way, especially the correct and effective use of semicolons to connect two closely related complete sentences.
Additionally, I found the session on journal analysis invaluable. Carrie offered practical strategies for selecting the right outlet: researching editorial boards, networking, understanding a journal’s aim and scope, ensuring a good disciplinary fit, and considering the impact factor without letting it dictate everything.
Overall, Carrie delivered an outstanding workshop: informative, energizing, and surprisingly fun. I left feeling more confident and equipped to write with clarity, purpose, and strategy.

"I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Dohe's workshop, Writing and Publishing Research Articles in English. It introduced me to essential principles of elegant writing, as well as key academic insights. Dr. Dohe’s teaching style exemplifies the very values she promotes: simplicity, clarity, and conciseness. Her advice is invaluable to academia.”
Alban Sharkey, University of Leipzig, Graduate School for Global and Area Studies (GSGAS)

“I would like to thank you for the excellent workshop [on Academic Writing and Publishing Research Articles in English] and express my appreciation for the valuable lessons I have learned. Your style of teaching is truly outstanding, and I would highly recommend your workshop to my peers.”
Moritz Blum, Semantic Computing Group, Bielefeld University

“Thank you very much for your workshop [on Academic Writing and Publishing Research Articles in English]! It was very hands-on, informative, and exciting. We were engaged the whole time. I could always follow, even though my English is not perfect. The handouts and slides were also very helpful. I have gained a lot of valuable information and would highly recommend this workshop.”
Darina Schilirò, Engineering, German Catholic University of Applied Science

“The course ‘Writing and Publishing Research Articles’ with Carrie Dohe was brilliant as the input went beyond my expectations: Carrie’s selection of topics was very interesting for each of us as we were from different disciplines. Next to the principles of writing and the importance of scheduling daily writing times, we gained deep insights in the whole process of not only writing articles, but also of analysing journals, handing in and reviewing articles. The examples provided by Carrie were very well-chosen to be able to understand the steps to be taken until a research article can finally be published. Our course really benefited from Carrie’s rich experience in this field. By the way, despite being an English teacher for secondary schools in Germany, I still gained new insights in the tricky bits of the English grammar, which keeps me on track again with polishing my English.”
Veronika Phung, Music Pedagogy, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

Time and Self-Management
"As a staff scientist and mother of three young children, I went into Carrie’s seminar feeling quite proficient about time management already. After all, I had managed to survive thus far! I was wrong. Certainly, during the seminar we learned many good techniques to structure our day-to-day work more productively, some of which I still use regularly to this day. But most treasurable to me was the long-term horizon being front and center during those two days. In her light, witty way, Carrie got us to step out of the hamster wheel for a minute and think about time management in terms of life management. All in all, her seminar had a huge impact, both on my change of career a year later, and on everything else."
Claudia Comito, Member, Federated Systems and Data Division, Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, Institute for Advanced Simulation (IAS), Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC)
I can warmly recommend Dr. Carrie Dohe’s workshop on “Getting to the Finish Line: Time Management for Doctoral Students and Postdoctoral Researchers”. Dr. Dohe began our workshop by asking us to write our struggles with time management on colored pieces of paper, which were then hung on a pin board. Keeping her eye on our stated needs, Dr. Dohe first discussed with us our long-term visions and gave techniques for setting priorities for the year, month, week and day. She then moved on to present multiple strategies to maintain motivation and increase efficiency in reading, writing and research. Procrastination and distractions were discussed, as were tips for maintaining a meaningful work-life balance, and the whole workshop was supplemented by tips from the field of neuroscience. We wrapped it up by discussing how to best work with others, from supervisors and colleagues, to partners and kids. We felt safe enough to discuss our personal challenges openly, as Dr. Dohe listened carefully and worked with each person to find the best-fitting solution. By the end of the workshop, all those colored pieces of paper had been removed from the pin board – Dr. Dohe successfully answered all our questions to our full satisfaction! Despite this being an intensive two-day workshop, we stayed fully engaged by Dr. Dohe’s personal attention and lively teaching style. Our whole group gives the workshop a big thumbs up!

“I really enjoyed the two days in Carrie’s workshop! Her personality, along with her broad academic and life experience, helped us find real solutions to our time and self-management challenges. Moreover, she addresses highly relevant issues such as the relationship with one’s supervisor and managing a PhD while raising children. For me personally, the advice to make the time I dedicate to my PhD nonnegotiable was especially helpful. I also found her tips on forming new habits absolutely brilliant. I am really looking forward to her returning to our university with more workshops.
Galyna Orlova, PhD student & academic staff member in the field of linguistics, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder)

“I would highly recommend Dr. Carrie Dohe’s workshop on time management to others. She supplies an abundance of tips and exercises, so that all workshop participants are sure to go home with ideas that fit their own personality and lifestyle. She is a very personable and engaging instructor, who combines research, personal experience, good listening skills and humor to guide her seminar participants to finding individualized solutions to each person’s time management problems. In my own case, Carrie helped me discover the reasons for a writer’s block and encouraged me to take the steps that were right for me to overcome it. Her democratic style of teaching created an egalitarian atmosphere, such that our mixed group of Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers and I as a professor could all relax and communicate openly with each other.”

"I learned valuable strategies for improving my time and self-management, including techniques to strengthen focus and reduce everyday distractions. The workshop also encouraged me to reflect on areas where my current planning practices can be improved. Dr. Dohe’s thoughtful and supportive approach made the experience especially meaningful, as she took great care to address each participant’s personal challenges"

Successful Academic and Postdoctoral Applications for the International Academy
"I attended Dr. Carrie Dohe’s workshop on “Successful Academic and Postdoctoral Applications for the International Academy” through GRADE – Goethe Research Academy for Early Career Researchers in October 2024. It was one of the best workshops I have ever attended. I was impressed by the support and realism Dr. Dohe brought to the whole classroom, how well she dealt with people with different backgrounds and with different needs, and her critical point of view, making us realize that we need to be ourselves. She really tailored the workshop to the needs of each participant, with very flexible content, something that is not seen frequently in academia. It was very apparent that Dr. Dohe wanted the best for the workshop participants.
Dr. Dohe’s attention to detail was exemplary, as she analyzed examples of cover letters and CVs to illustrate best practices. I was also very thankful for Dr. Dohe’s willingness to share all her materials that she herself produced or were based on her own experience.
Picture
The biggest take-home message that I immediately used was Dr. Dohe’s "after-the-interview thank you message". Following this advice, I sent a thank-you message to a recruiter, who, although unable to currently hire me, volunteered to put me in contact with other potential employers.
I would highly recommend this workshop to other academic job seekers, but also to anyone with an academic background who is or plans to be in the job market."

“I attended the workshop ‘Successful Academic and Postdoctoral Applications for the International Academy’ offered by the GRADE program at Goethe University in Frankfurt. The course covered all aspects of the academic career, from crafting cover letters to successful grant proposals. Carrie was very generous by providing all the course materials and personalized feedback on CVs and cover letters. I believe this learning experience was truly valuable.”
Dr. Maira Cardoso, Postdoctoral Researcher in Zoology, Ecology and Conservation, Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre, Frankfurt am Main

“Dear Dr. Dohe,
Greetings. I write to specially thank you for your workshop on ‘Successful Academic and Postdoctoral Applications’ at our University (Mainz) many months ago. That workshop has been very helpful to me. Applying the insights and methods learnt from it, I applied and got documents for funding to an external funding agency for a conference we are organizing with my doctoral supervisor, and it was successfully approved. I literally followed most of your advice in that application. My supervisor was surprised that we got the funding because he said he had applied for other conferences 3 times earlier to the same agency but none had been approved. In short, that was one of the most beneficial workshops I have ever attended here. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.”

“I have benefited greatly from Ms. Dohe's workshop on the ‘Academic Career Search’. Her engaging and informed instruction created a productive working atmosphere during the seminar, and her extensive handouts continue to be a tremendous help well beyond that. Shortly after the workshop, the knowledge I gained already helped me in a successful application. I would certainly attend a workshop with Ms. Dohe again.”
Steffen Schaub, doctoral candidate in English Language and Literature, University of Marburg

In April 2026, I participated in the workshop “Reading, Writing and Study Skills in English” that you led. It offered many highly practical insights and reading strategies, especially for PhD students who are non-native English speakers. What I found most useful and engaging were the short, timed writing exercises, which are very effective for training one to distill key research ideas and improve written expression. In addition, certain reading techniques, such as clearly identifying the function of each sentence within a paragraph, are extremely helpful for quickly understanding academic texts. Beyond these academic suggestions, I found your advice on maintaining physical and mental well-being through exercise and by optimizing one’s working environment particularly important, especially for researchers who spend long hours in front of a computer. I would strongly recommend this workshop to anyone currently working on, or preparing to begin, their thesis, as it is truly highly beneficial.

“If I were to characterize the workshop “Academic Reading, Study and Writing Skills in English” by Carrie Dohe in three words, they would be Clarity, Concision, and Precision. I studied Protestant Theology at Humboldt University in Berlin and am currently working on a dissertation project at Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. I decided to participate in a workshop on Academic Writing because I want to improve significantly in this important discipline. The workshop led by Carrie took place over two days. It was very productive and rewarding. I received many pieces of advice and tips that allow me to manage my time productively and better. The workshop covered all aspects of academic writing, starting from academic reading to dealing with artificial intelligence. We also received very clear explanations about the structure of an essay or academic writing in an Anglo-Saxon and/or American context, as well as about the differences in punctuation between an American essay and a German essay. I was very impressed by the teaching of Carrie from the very beginning. Anyone who works as a teacher knows how difficult it is to keep listeners engaged for two 8-hour sessions. Carrie has a style of doing this that makes it possible to succeed. She knows how to teach with focus, enthusiasm, and passion while involving the students. She also remains very constructive in her corrections and explanations throughout.”

1:1 Support for Researchers: Private Coaching

“I had requested Dr. Dohe’s help as a coach to prepare for my first scholarly conference in English. My tasks were to oversee an academic panel, introduce each panelist, moderate the Q&A session, and give a response that reflected on each presentation and on the panel as a whole. Dr. Dohe coached me in professional introductions, terminology and the basic linguistic building blocks of academic English. She then provided sterling tips on how to prepare a list of “prompts” to summarize each talk as it was delivered, comparing them to each other and to the panel’s abstract, so that it was easy to create a strong and thought-provoking response to the panel. Dr. Dohe also coached me in creating two “elevator pitches” (conversational descriptions of my research), tailored to capture the attention of scholars both in and outside of my particular field. Her coaching really boosted my self-confidence and feeling of preparedness. The conference thus went extremely well and I was very satisfied with my performance.”

Copy-editing and Translation (German to English)

I am happy to warmly recommend Dr. Carrie Dohe as a highly competent copy-editor and translator (German to English). We have worked together numerous times over the years. She has supported my academic work through copy-editing research articles I have written as well as currently translating an anthology for the University of Marburg Museum of Religions (due out in 2026). Whether Dr. Dohe works with a single individual or a group of authors, whether copy-editing or translating, she goes the extra mile to make sure a text is not only grammatically correct but also stylistically elegant. With our anthology, she has striven to unify the very different contributions, not by muting their very different voices, but developing certain linguistic themes that carry the reader from chapter to chapter. Her work is timely, meticulous and of the highest quality. I am so pleased with her work that I plan to continue to employ her services.
