CARRIE B. DOHE, Ph.D.

LEARN MORE
“Recently, I had the pleasure of participating in an academic writing workshop facilitated by Carrie Dohe, and the whole experience was truly rewarding. Carrie’s professionalism, and genuine passion for supporting researchers made the learning process both enjoyable and intellectually stimulating.
"Three insights stood out to me in particular: 1) Carrie encouraged us to study the journals we want to publish in and ask a fundamental yet often overlooked question: Who needs my work? She also pointed out something that has stayed with me -- when we publish, we are also speaking to the scholars whose work we cite; they are our crowd. This reframing made me reconsider how I position my research within academic conversations; 2) Her breakdown of paragraph architecture and the essential structure of a research article was eye-opening. It clarified not only how to build an argument logically, but also how to guide the reader with intention and clarity; 3) I particularly loved the practical exercises she offered. One of them was to become a “critical reader” by spending two weeks reading only abstracts, noticing what attracts or repels you — and then gradually moving to introductions, methods, and so on. It’s such a simple yet powerful way to sharpen writing skills.
"During the workshop, we also explored punctuation and grammar choices across different sections of an article — for example, how stylistic decisions shift when describing methods versus interpreting results. These nuances made me more attentive to clarity and precision in my English writing.
"Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and left feeling inspired, better equipped, and more confident in my academic writing. I highly recommend collaborating with Carrie Dohe, and I would gladly join another learning experience with her in the future.”

TESTIMONIALS

Professional Presentations
“The contents of the course were optimally adapted to our needs. Ms. Dohe gave example of specific vocabulary and phrases; language exercises were conducted, `language emergency situations´ trained, as well as suggestions for the design of lectures, speeches, and abstracts given. Each participant presented his or her own conference presentation and received individual feedback, also with video recordings. I highly recommend Ms. Dohe's course. It is the ideal refresher in the run-up to international congresses and I am sure that our department will continue to take courses with her.”

Conference Preparation
“Ms. Dohe knew how to create a pleasant learning atmosphere in which the skills acquired could be strengthened. She competently accompanied the learning process with constructive comments and was able to respond to the individual needs of the participants. It was also very helpful that Dr. Dohe incorporated her own experience as an active scholar into the course. For anyone who would like to improve their ability to present themselves adequately at international conferences, I can strongly recommend participating in this course.”
Dr. Tobias Müller, Dilthey Fellow (Volkswagen Foundation), Philosophical Seminar, Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz
“I can warmly recommend this seminar [on giving professional presentations at international conferences] to every young scholar as well as to experienced scientists! Ms. Dohe not only teaches the basic presentation techniques to great advantage, she also helps the individual participant to speak, argue and communicate confidently in English.”

Writing and Publishing Your Research
"I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Dohe's workshop, Writing and Publishing Research Articles in English. It introduced me to essential principles of elegant writing, as well as key academic insights. Dr. Dohe’s teaching style exemplifies the very values she promotes: simplicity, clarity, and conciseness. Her advice is invaluable to academia.

Time and Self-Management
I can warmly recommend Dr. Carrie Dohe’s workshop on “Getting to the Finish Line: Time Management for Doctoral Students and Postdoctoral Researchers”. Dr. Dohe began our workshop by asking us to write our struggles with time management on colored pieces of paper, which were then hung on a pin board. Keeping her eye on our stated needs, Dr. Dohe first discussed with us our long-term visions and gave techniques for setting priorities for the year, month, week and day. She then moved on to present multiple strategies to maintain motivation and increase efficiency in reading, writing and research. Procrastination and distractions were discussed, as were tips for maintaining a meaningful work-life balance, and the whole workshop was supplemented by tips from the field of neuroscience. We wrapped it up by discussing how to best work with others, from supervisors and colleagues, to partners and kids. We felt safe enough to discuss our personal challenges openly, as Dr. Dohe listened carefully and worked with each person to find the best-fitting solution. By the end of the workshop, all those colored pieces of paper had been removed from the pin board – Dr. Dohe successfully answered all our questions to our full satisfaction! Despite this being an intensive two-day workshop, we stayed fully engaged by Dr. Dohe’s personal attention and lively teaching style. Our whole group gives the workshop a big thumbs up!

Reading and Study Skills
As a first-year PhD student in Computer Science at Goethe University Frankfurt, I attended the workshop “Academic Reading, Study and Writing Skills in English” on May 8-9, 2025, by Dr. Carrie Dohe hoping to elevate my research skills. More particularly, with my personal background being more focused on application and development, I felt quite overwhelmed by the prospect of conducting sophisticated literature reviews. Luckily, this interactive two-day experience did not only help me in overcoming the well-known imposter syndrome; Dr. Dohe also opened my eyes to the importance of a clear writing style - and how to successfully disentangle beneficial insights even in its absence. Alongside practical exercises introducing literature analysis, skimming and scanning, Dr. Dohe shared great advice on balancing physical and mental exercises in day-to-day life to improve my health and focus (my personal favourite being the 5-min-writing). I can highly recommend anyone working in academia to participate and am looking forward to learn even more in the future!”

Successful Academic and Postdoctoral Applications for the International Academy
"I attended Dr. Carrie Dohe’s workshop on “Successful Academic and Postdoctoral Applications for the International Academy” through GRADE – Goethe Research Academy for Early Career Researchers in October 2024. It was one of the best workshops I have ever attended. I was impressed by the support and realism Dr. Dohe brought to the whole classroom, how well she dealt with people with different backgrounds and with different needs, and her critical point of view, making us realize that we need to be ourselves. She really tailored the workshop to the needs of each participant, with very flexible content, something that is not seen frequently in academia. It was very apparent that Dr. Dohe wanted the best for the workshop participants.
Dr. Dohe’s attention to detail was exemplary, as she analyzed examples of cover letters and CVs to illustrate best practices. I was also very thankful for Dr. Dohe’s willingness to share all her materials that she herself produced or were based on her own experience.
The biggest take-home message that I immediately used was Dr. Dohe’s "after-the-interview thank you message". Following this advice, I sent a thank-you message to a recruiter, who, although unable to currently hire me, volunteered to put me in contact with other potential employers.
I would highly recommend this workshop to other academic job seekers, but also to anyone with an academic background who is or plans to be in the job market."
